If your iPhone is not up to date with the latest iOS software, it may not pair to the Apple Watch. We also encourage you to turn on Automatic Updates so it will automatically install when released. To ensure your phone has the latest software, please perform the following:
- On your iPhone, open the Settings
- Select General
- Select Software Update
- If not already selected, turn on Automatic Updates
- If there is an available update, it will appear here (Example iOS 16.4.1).
- If it states iOS is up to date, then you have the latest software already installed and do not have to do anything further.
- You can then download and install the software. This can take upwards of an hour. It is suggested to plug the phone into its charger while the update occurs.
- Once the update is completed, it will say “iOS is up to date”.
To check for software updates on your Apple Watch, follow these steps:
- On your iPhone, open the Watch app
- Select General
- Select Software Update
- If not already selected, turn on Automatic Updates
- If there is an available update, it will appear here (Example watchOS 9.5).
- If it states watchOS is up to date, then you have the latest watch software already installed and do not have to do anything further.
- Tap on Install to initiate the download. This can take upwards of an hour. You will need to keep the Apple Watch on the charger and have your iPhone near and connected to WiFi. The installation will start when the Apple Watch has at least 50% battery life.

Do not restart or remove the Apple Watch from its charger until the software update is complete.
- Once the update is completed, it will say “watchOS is up to date”.
